Appaloosa
Appaloosa je americké skvrnité plemeno, které chovali indiáni Nez Percé, vlastním jménem Numipu. Kolem roku 1730 přejali od Šošonů chov koní, zdivočelých potomků stád dovezených španělskými dobyvateli. Numipové původně žili od středního Idaha po západní Oregon, postupně byli bělochy vytlačeni a násilně přestěhováni do rezervací. Hlavní oblastí chovu byla chráněná údolí řek Snake (Hadí), Clearwater a Palouse...
Vysvětlení názvu:
Název plemene je odvozen od říčky Palouse, která se vlévá do Hadí řeky u níž žili indiánští chovatelé koní kmene Nez Percé (z franc. Propíchnuté nosy).
Původ a historie:
Jako mnoho amerických plemen, je i appaloosa potomkem španělských koní, kteří byli dovezeni do Střední Ameriky a odtud se rozšířili na sever. Indiánští chovatelé pak tyto koně zdokonalili a vytvořili velmi otužilý a všestranný typ koně s výbornou povahou. Appaloosa by pravděpodobně vyhynula jako většina idniánských plemen, ale její skvrnité zbarvení, zděděné po španělských předcích, vzbudilo pozornost několika nadšenců, kteří plemeno zachránili.
Appaloosa byla omezena na poměrně malé území v severochýchodním Oregonu, jihovýchodním Washingtonu a Idahu. Tato oblast je poměrně suchá, drsná a málo schůdná, jen říční údolí poskytují lepší podmínky. Koně se do této oblasti dostali z Mexika, zřejmě prostřednictvím sousedního kmene Šošonů. Šlo jistě o omezený počet zvířat, takže se zde upevnilo přirozené plemeno s charakteristickými znaky, které nemá na světě obdoby. Indiáni kmene Numipu věnovali svým koním mimořádnou pozornost a uplatňovali velmi správné chovatelské zásady. Od roku 1730 cílevědomě šlechtili koně, včetně kastrování hřebců, kteří nesplňovali požadovaný standard a prodej nevyhovujících klisen jiným kmenům. Ačkoliv barvě odznaků koní přikládali podobně jako jiné indiánské kmeny veliký význam, Nez Percéové požadovali především skromné, vytrvalé pracovní koně, kteří by se hodili i pro válečné účely a k lovu. V roce 1806 je o nich zvláštní zmínka ve zprávě z výzkumné cesty Lewise a Clarka k Tichému oceánu; kvalitu koní Nez Percéú náležitě ocenili. Plemeno však bylo téměř vyhlazeno o 70 let později...
Vláda tehdy zabrala indiánskou půdu a indiáni z kmene Nez Percé museli podepsat dohodu přesídlení do rezervací. Zde žili ve špatných podmínkách na nepatrné části svého bývalého území a museli chov koní omezit. Asi 740 členů na dohodu nepřistoupilo a v roce 1877 se pokusilo pod vedením náčelníka Josepha o odvetu. Pokusili se probít do Kanady, kde se chtěli usadit. Po 1900 kilometrech útěku je americká armáda na hranicích dostihla, v bitvě porazila a zbytky donutila k návratu do Kansasu, kde zakrátko vymřeli. Appaloosa živořila až do roku 1938, kdy se jí ujali chovatelé z městečka Moscow v sousedství rezervace Nez Percéů. Ustanovili Appaloosa Horse Club, který se pokusil na základě několika málo potomků koní Nez Percé plemeno vzkřísit. Plemeno se rozmnožilo a stalo se oblíbeným honáckým koněm. Dnes už se chová v USA ve statisícovém množství (registr plemene je třetí největší na světě a eviduje na 400 000 koní) a vyváží se i do jiných částí světa. Chová se i v Evropě, zejména pro reprezentační účely a westernové ježdění. Ve Spojeném království existuje velmi aktivní British Appaloosa Society (přičleněná k Appaloosa Horse Club). Plemeno je bezděčnou připomínkou faktu, že bezohledná politika vybíjení indiánů kromě kulturních škod připravila lidstvo o mnoho zajímavých přírodních plemen koní i dalších domácích zvířat.
Popis a charakteristika:
Appaloosa je přirozené plemeno, ustálené v extrémních podmínkách. Charakteristickým znakem je krátká a řídká hříva a slabě ožíněný ocas, což je přizpůsobení pohybu v trnitých křovinách. Právě tento znak je však těžké v chovu udržet, není dominantní. Původí appaloosa byl poměrně drobný kůň s velmi suchou stavbou a vynikajícími končetinami, zejména tvrdým kopytem. Šikmá plec zaručuje lehký, dlouhý a pružný krok. Toto plemeno vyniká snadnou orientací a obratným pohybem i v zarostlém a kamenitém terénu.
Moderní appaloosa měří v kohoutku 147 - 150 cm, původní koně byli asi o 5 - 10 cm nižší. Obvod hrudníku je poněkud menší, pod 180 cm, obvod holeně asi 20 cm. Typickým znakem appaloosy je dobře viditelné bělmo kolem celé duhovky, skvrnitá kůže na chřípí a kolem genitálií, pestré zbarvení srsti a černo-bíle svisle pruhovaná kopyta, která jsou údajně mnohem pružnější než jednobarevná. Žíně hřívy a ohonu tvoří obyčejně prameny a jsou jemné a řídké. Jako u nejlepších honáckých koní je i tělo appaloosy kompaktní s dobře klenutými žebry. Délka krku je přiměřená tělu. Kohoutek je výrazný, šikmá plec podmiňuje dlouhý, lehký a pružný krok. Záď je mohutná, především u koní s přikříženou krví amerického honáckého koně. Appaloosa má pět základních typů zbarvení, někdy se jako zvláštní typ udává šesté zbarvení - dešťové kapky (raindrops).
Zbarvení:
- leopard (nesprávně tygr, správněji hermelín) - převážně bílý s tmavými vejčitými skvrnami po celém těle
- sněhová vločka (snowflake) - je naopak tmavé zbarvení s bílými kulatými skvrnami po těle, nejhustěji na zádi
- mramorový (marble) - má rozseté pestré skvrny po celém těle
- deka (blanket) - je označení pro tmavé zbarvení, kdy kříž a záď jsou buď bílé nebo skvrnité
- jinovatka (frost) - má drobné bílé skvrnky po celém tmavém těle, ale skvrny nejsou pravidelné, nýbrž větvené.
- dešťové kapky (raindrops) - bílý kůň má po sobě tmavě skvrny protáhlého tvaru, připomínající slzy
Zbarvení appaloosy je však velmi proměnlivé, někdy je blanket kombinován s raindrops a podobně. Je to zbarvení velmi atraktivní a tak ustálené, že se prosazuje i při křížení s jinými plemeny, například s americkým honáckým koněm, s americkým ponym nebo s coloradským rančerským koněm. Ovšem dnes se objevuje toto zbarvení i u velšských pony a jiných evropských koní. Zbravení appaloosa tedy již není vyhrazeno tomuto jedinému plemeni.
Povaha:
Appaloosa je velmi učenlivý, ovladatelný a skromný kůň. Díky zděděné obratnosti v pohybu neschůdným terénem se velmi snadno učí všemu potřebnému pro ovládání dobytka, pro westernové ježdění, ale i pro skokové soutěže. Tito koně jsou velmi tvrdí, ale pracují s elánem a vůči člověku jsou poddajní a učenliví. Plemeno si uchovalo mnoho přírodních vlastností, například schopnost se skvěle se orientovat v krajině, vyhledávat vodu a také se vypořádat s přirozenými nepřáteli. Appaloosy jsou na pastvině zcela samostatné a nepotřebují valný dohled.
Využití a sport:
Původní appaloosy sloužily hlavně k jízdě bez sedla a k nošení břemen. Indiáni většinou nepoužívali uzdu, jen ohlávku a spoléhali spíše na dokonalý výcvik koně. Jejich moderní potomci však pracují jako kovbojští koně, neboť zdědili skvělý cit pro práci s dobytkem. Třebaže jsou poměrně lehcí, dovedou na lase udržet i těžkého býka. Jsou výborní i pro rekreační ježdění a všechny druhy sportovních aktivit, pokud nejde vysloveně o dostihové záležitosti. Jejich vytrvalost a houževnatost se uplatňuje zejména v distančních jízdách. Zvláště oblíbeni jsou u orgánizátorů turistických vyjížděk, protože se v každém terénu pohybují velmi jistě a jsou zcela spolehliví. Je zajímavé, že appaloosy zdaleka nejsou tak lekavé jako jiní koně.
Tato mimořádná popularita má však i svou stinnou stránku. Původní rysy přírodního plemene se stále rychleji stírají. Je velmi těžké udržet ve změněných podmínkách a za změněného pracovního nasazení originalitu plemene. Pochopitelně lze uchovat atraktivní zbarvení (na to se velmi dbá) a existuje snaha zachovat i jemnou a řídkou hřívu a ohon. Avšak s větším zatížením a lepší výživou se ze štíhlých koníků stávají svalovci. Takže vlastně jen velmi málo dnešních amerických appaloos odpovídá typu svých předků. Klub chovatelů appaloos usiluje o uchování originálního rázu, ale komerční zájmy pracují proti němu. A tak jsou často v USA k vidění místo skutečné appaloosy efektně zbarvení honáčtí koně - však se také appaloosy často kříží s quartery a s jinými pracovními koňmi, stejně jako s poníky a jinými plemeny.
